Built in 1865, the sprawling 20-acre Blackstone Asylum has been serving the psychiatric health needs of New Hampshire residents for many years. Once the first of its name to provide quality care for mentally ill patients, the Asylum unfortunately fell into financial difficulties by the end of the nineteenth century. The history of the Asylum grows dark then, but was notably shielded from the eye of the public. A lack of funds meant starving and dying patients, a negligible full-time staff, and the facility falling into general disrepair.

After a short closing in 1915, the Blackstone Asylum was soon rebranded, refreshed, and updated under the management of new owners. A reminder of the unfortunate failures past, a part of the old Asylum today is preserved in an on-site museum.

Recovering from the tough times, the Asylum now seems to be a bright and cheery place, technologically advanced and well-equipped to offer only the best care. But ask any of the long-term patients, and you might get a different sense of what hides behind pristine walls. There are whisperings of disembodied voices in the hallways at night, the shuffling of feet and the screams of patients who suffered and died on the grounds so long ago. Rumors tell that lights flicker and objects move around on their own, spirits laughing and playing but also asking for help. There's one woman in particular, the pregnant ex-patient Lady in White, who is said to haunt the lower floors of the main building, desperately clawing at the living to find her husband who died in the war.

Regardless of the truth of these supernatural claims, one would be wise to not walk the Asylum grounds alone past sunset.
